Suddenly, a person is no longer just a solitary individual. A throng forms at a bottleneck, a sea of spectators gather to cheer on their teams at a football match. What happens when we become part of a crowd? This exhibition aims to deconstruct the negative image of crowds from different points of view. Discover the restricting, liberating and surprising effect of being one of many.
12th December 2025 – 19th July 2026
When we leave our homes, we are quickly confronted with crowds of people; on the road, on the train, at the pool, at the concert, at the funfair or at the protest march – and, of course, on a rainy Sunday at the Museum of Communication. Very often, the people in these crowds are complete strangers, and yet we perceive the crowd as a whole, as an interconnected entity. The crowd and the individuals in it are constantly interacting with each other – randomly, inadvertently, unwittingly.
What physical laws are at play within large groups of people? How can crowds be directed so as to avoid dangerous situations? When are we the better singers, alone or as part of a group? And what dynamics develop among crowds of people on the Internet or on social media? These are the questions raised and examined by the successful exhibition from Paris which shows us how to behave when we too are part of a crowd.
Developed and realised by Cité des sciences et de l’industrie (Paris). The exhibition is recommended for children aged 13 and over. The exhibition languages are German, French and English.
