Solo exhibition of Edgar Calel
EDGAR CALEL (*1987) is a Guatemalan artist whose work explores agricultural traditions and rituals, as well as the protection of nature in his homeland. He has close family ties to Indigenous Maya culture and is deeply interested in Maya cosmovision — a worldview that sees life as a spiritual and interconnected relationship between people, the land, ancestors, and nature.
He critically examines today’s plantations in Guatemala and their monocultures that are usually exported, along with the unfair working conditions they often create. At the same time, he shows how Indigenous communities resist the exploitation of their land and continue to fight for their rights and the protection of natural resources.
