The Battle of Murten: Staging a Victory

Murten, 22 June 1476: The Confederates and their allies won in their battle against the troops of the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold. Around 400 years later, the Zürcher Panoramagesellschaft drew in the crowds with the Murten Panorama: a monumental painting that is 100 metres long and 10 metres tall. Then, in 2002, the Panorama made a huge impact when it is presented in a cube on Lake Murten during the Expo.02 Swiss National Exhibition. After more than twenty years out of public view, the panorama can now be discovered in a renewed form at the museum.

The exhibition is now taking a fresh look at an event that is deeply ingrained in Bernese and Swiss collective memories. How is history staged to ensure that it captivates us? What purposes do these presentations pursue, and who benefits from them?  On this tour you will discover the most diverse approaches to staging the Battle of Murten – ranging from a commemorative parade to the digital panorama. Will you let yourself be swept away by their power?
